AI to Detect and Respond to Abuse and Neglect

Help Us Develop Open Source Artificial Intelligence (AI) Capable of Alerting Loved Ones and Authorities of Child and Elder Abuse and Neglect

The Problem -
In the United States alone five children die every day from abuse and/or neglect, and those over the age of 60 have a 10% chance of becoming a victim by their caretakers. Abuse and neglect can occur at home, in daycare/childcare, kindergartens, schools, foster care, youth centers, and assisted living facilities. Unfortunately abuse and neglect is infrequently detected even when traditional security cameras are in place until substantial physical and emotional damage has already been done.

The Solution -
A swift response to abuse and neglect can save lives and brighten futures. To address this, we are generating open source artificial intelligence (AI) capable of monitoring audio and video in real time for indicators of abuse and neglect, recording potential incidences, and instantly sending a text or email alert to family members and/or authorities. Thus, in the unfortunate event abuse or neglect occurs it can be immediately responded to. The AI itself will be freely distributed to the public, and we plan to develop a highly affordable device integrating the AI that we hope to make free to those on restricted/fixed incomes.

Why We Need Your Support -
To further develop the AI we need to teach the “computer” how to recognize abuse and neglect accurately in diverse situations. This means we need to collect and code 10,000s of examples of child and elder abuse and neglect. Will also need to simulate various types of abuse using actors and diverse lifelike dummies to have a sufficient set of data. This process will be time intensive and emotionally draining. Imagine having to watch and code scenes of abuse day in and day out for weeks on end. We also need the latest technological infrastructure to train and package the AI and to develop an affordable system for deploying it.

All of this makes the mission costly and your support means we do not need to rely on traditional investment schemes. Thus, rather than producing a commercial product that profits off the suffering of the most vulnerable in our communities, we can focus on building the best open source AI to distribute to everyone to address this long overdue problem.

How Long Will It Take -
Development will take place in two stages and is projected to take a maximum of two years. In the first stage data will be collected and generated to train the AI. Collection of data and training will be ongoing, though with sufficient funding we hope to have enough data collected in the first six to nine months to construct and make available the first generation of the AI. In the second stage the device will be constructed, and the DIY plans made available.

How Your Support Will Be Used -
The project will require roughly $360,000 to complete quickly – slower progress will be made with less.

1.      The equipment to train the model and procure the component parts to develop the device will cost roughly $55,000. Once this funding amount is hit we will have the dedicated infrastructure needed to begin and can start adding data and training the AI while developing the device.

2.      The dummies will cost approximately $30,000 as it is important that they are 1:1 replica of infants, children, and adults. Thus, once we reach roughly $85,000 we will be able to procure the dummies and start adding increased data to the AI for training.

3.      While the leadership on the team will volunteer their free time the sheer scope of the project means that several full-time members will be required if the project is to be completed rapidly. We estimate the cost of a full time member to be $58,420 if they are provided a livable wage ($20 an hour), excellent no-deductible health and mental health insurance, and two weeks of paid vacation.

4.      In the event that we receive more funding than required to develop the AI and device the remainder will be used to: Provide user support to those using the AI, refine the AI with further data and feedback from the community, and construct free devices for those on fixed/low-income budgets.

Leadership –
Nathaniel Ashby and Jonathan Korn, co-owners of God Mode AI LLC, will oversee and manage the project. Nathaniel holds a PhD in psychology and is an assistant professor of cognitive analytics. Nathaniel is an expert in human cognition and behavior and a creative problem solver. Jonathan is a law enforcement veteran and a PhD candidate in data analytics. Jonathan is an adept programmer with a passion for using technology to improve the security and safety of individuals.

Thank you for your support. Every contribution brings us closer to making the world safer for the most vulnerable among us.
