. On August 18, 2017, Jacob, my niece Carla’s beautiful 9-year-old son, was burned in a horrible campfire accident in Minnesota. Over 20% of his body, including his face, chest and right arm are covered in third degree burns.
Jacob has already spent 24 days in the ICU Burn Unit, must of it while intubated and sedated, with a feeding tube. His birthday was this past week. Jacob has already had several skin graft surgeries, grafted with his own leg and back skin, as well as cadaver skin. He has had mesh grafting on his entire arm and chest, sheet grafting on his hand, and grafting on his neck, ear to ear. We are still waiting to see how much grafting he may need on his face, and are not yet certain how many additional surgeries little Jacob will need.
The physical and mental anguish burn victims endure is overwhelming, and Jacob has a long recovery ahead. When he is released from the ICU at some point, Jacob will homebound for at least a month. Eventually, Jacob will go back to school for half days, while he works up to full days, and will need a tutor during that time. Jacob will have to wear compression garments for some time and for 2-3 years will have to stay out of the sun and out of the cold (hard to do in Minnesota winters) to avoid wind burns, frostbite and sun exposure.
This family is deeply in need of your immediate help. Carla’s ability to work has been impacted while she cares for Jacob in the ICU, and her two younger daughters. The expenses and the impact on her work will be financially devastating for them. Please find it in your hearts to donate to help with:
