Justover two years ago in December 2012, my Dad, a fit and healthy 54 year old was struck down with a mystery illness which within 48 hours rendered him completely paralysed and on a life support machine. This illness we grew to understand was named 'Guillain Barre Syndrome', a neurological condition whereby your body's own immune system attacks the peripheral nervous system.
During the next few frightening weeks my Dad was in a 'locked in coma', fully aware of what was happening around him but with no means of communicating. After regaining consciousness, he was firstly only able to communicate using his eyes to blink in conjunction with an alphabet board and then after a gruelling 11 months, weened himself off his ventilator and was able to breath and speak freely.
He spent two years in James Cook University hospital, during which time he missed out on his son's graduation and being able to be present following the birth of his first Grandchild.
Physiotheraphy was a daily fixture in his hospital routine and he has so far regained some movement in his arms and legs however not enough to be able to perform everyday tasks such as feeding himself, brushing his teeth and using the telephone. Now in a wheelchair he has been discharged to a nursing home in Darlington with zero physiotheraphy and relies wholly on the staff to help him with his daily routine. Without physiotherapy, my Dad may never reach his full recovery potential.
I am appealing to you all to ask if you can spare any amount of money no matter how small to help in my Dad's road to recovery. The exercise bike we would like to purchase for him is a MOTOmed and this is to ensure his arms and legs get daily exercise in the hope that he will one day be able to walk again and regain his independence.
