Saving Teddy

Donation protected
Teddy is a 3-year-old long haired chihuahua.  We rescued Teddy from a hoarder’s house in Modesto, CA together with 7 other dogs.  He is now safe with us and he is staying with his foster family. He was initially very scared that he wouldn’t let anybody near him.  He would nip out of extreme fear.  His foster mom worked with him daily to gain his trust by providing lots of love and treats.  Teddy has come a long way since then, and he blossomed into a normal playful dog. However, while in foster care, he started having seizures.  During his seizure episodes, his muscles become spastic and he would have difficulty breathing while he cried in pain.  It was very heart breaking to watch Teddy go through his seizure episodes.  We brought him to the vet and was started on several anti-seizure medications, however none provided relief. It was only until he was given low-dose phenobarbital that his seizures lessened in frequency (down to 1-2 episodes a month).  His seizures were fully under control when the neurologist increased his dose of phenobarbital.  Currently, Teddy has been seizure free for two months. However, his foster mom recently noticed that Teddy has been having difficulty with walking and was slowly progressing.  We brought Teddy to the vet who diagnosed him with bilateral subluxating patella.  Because this has been progressing, he is now at the point of needing surgery to repair both knees. Teddy has gone from a normal playful dog to a dog that is in constant pain and unable to walk.  He cries out in pain when his hind legs are touched.  He has difficulty managing simple tasks such as standing up to eat as his hind legs give out causing him to fall to the floor.  He tries to walk when he can but has a limp.  But mostly he is confined to his bed except when he would go out to potty and eat.  Without this surgery, his quality of life is very poor.  Despite his constant pain, Teddy still is able to show his sweet demeanor and still asks for tons of attention from his foster mom.  Teddy is still a young pup with so much energy to give.  He has had a lot of challenges at a very young age but he is a fighter.  We would like to give him all the opportunities to enjoy life and live long as he has still so much to offer.

Please consider donating towards Teddy’s surgical procedure and help give him a chance to walk and live his life to the fullest!
