Save Zeus' Vision

Donation protected
Zeus is a stunning one-year-old Siberian husky who was recently rescued by Indy Homes for Huskies from our local animal control agency, who had confiscated him along with 15 other huskies and one mixed breed dog. These dogs were all suffering from serious neglect - riddled with parasites, underweight, unsocialized, and without the first idea of what it is like to be a cherished member of a family.

A few weeks after having Zeus in foster care, his foster parents noticed that he seemed to be blind in his right eye.  He ran into furniture in the house and the eye appeared "fuzzy".  Zeus went to our regular veterinarian to have his vision checked, and it was noted that the lens was cloudy in both eyes, particularly the right, and our DVM determined he was likely suffering from juvenile cataracts and referred Zeus to see the ophthalmologist, who confirmed this diagnosis.

Because Zeus is so young, we feel it is imperative to explore the option of having the cataracts surgically removed.  Although dogs with vision loss can live fulfilling lives, we are concerned about the severity of his cataracts so early in his life.  A likely consequence of this disease progressing is that the cataract may shift position in the eye, leading to glaucoma, which is painful and will result in total vision loss and likely the removal of the eye.

One of our goals for the dogs in our program is to provide them with the best care possible, even while recognizing that we are working on a limited budget.  Now that Zeus is in our care, we would like to ensure he has the best chance at a normal, healthy life.  Our initial goal of $750  will fund Zeus' initial ophthalmologic evaluation and bloodwork done to rule out metabolic disease causing the vision loss.  The next step for Zeus is to have a procedure called an electroretinogram to determine if his retinas are still functional.  If so, he will be a good candidate for cataract surgery, and we will pursue further funding  to pay for that procedure.
