WATER IS LIFE; HELP SERVE GHANA GIVE LIFE

Children suffer and die from preventable diseases because they drink from germs-infested streams/ponds. Help Serve Ghana, Inc. sponsor mechanized water well/borehole systems to provide safe drinking water for them.  This will prevent avoidable diseases and deaths.

Serve Ghana Inc. is a not-for profit charitable organization whose vision is to collaborate with the Catholic Diocese of Techiman to provide, among other things,  adequate good drinking water for the underprivileged Ghanaians, particularly those in the Techiman Diocesan Catchment area. The communities/villages in this region form part of the most deprived areas in Ghana.  A majority of them are peasant farmers and petty traders who live in abject poverty and deprived rural areas; barely surviving below the International Poverty Threshold of less than $1.25/day.

Many do not have clean drinking water and therefore have to drink from germs-infested streams/ponds together with their livestock. Children suffer or die from preventable diseases and the general life expectancy is 50 years, 6 years lower than the national rate of 56 years due to lack of wholesome water and primary healthcare facilities. Some of these ponds/streams are about three to five miles away from the communities.  School children have to walk between three to five miles to fetch water with buckets and gallons and carry them on their heads or on bicycles home before they could bathe and go to school.

Getting clean water for them via mechanized boreholes is therefore an urgent necessity. A survey conducted by the Catholic Diocese of Techiman upon its inauguration in 2008 showed we needed about 100 borehole systems to give clean drinking water for the towns and villages in the catchment area. With the benevolence of people like you the diocese has been able to provide thirty five borehole systems as at the end of 2019 at the cost of about $8,000.00 each. We need sixty five more. One mechanized borehole system serves a town/village of between One Hundred and Two Thousand (100 - 2000) people.

They are managed by some selected women in the communities/villages who are given some stipend at the end of the month from the $0.05 price per 5gallons-bucket that are collected from the people. This makes them take ownership of them and to maintain and repair them in case of any break down. This also ensures the sustainability of the project. These boreholes will provide the inhabitants with safe drinking water right within the communities. This will forestall the daily three to five miles walk by children for water, prevent avoidable diseases and deaths and increase the general life expectancy of the people.

Our mission for this year is to provide three mechanized wells/boreholes through this mode of fundraising. Our Fundraising target for this year through this mode of fundraising is therefore Twenty Four Thousand Dollars.
