We are the Westerly High School Sophomore English for Social Action class, a class that explores literature and life to learn about how to take a stand and make a change. Our first project is close to us, as two members of our class have relatives in Puerto Rico.
The recent hurricane, Maria, left 60 percent of the island without water or electricity (Robles, Alvarez & Fandos)--and the wide-scale conditions are not predicted to change for four to six months.
It takes only $28 through the UNICEF organization to, according to the United Nations-affiliated site, "provide a kit containing basic, essential supplies [...][to] help children and their families keep clean and healthy, protecting them from diseases that can occur after the loss of equipment and infrastructure and the disruption of a safe water supply" in Puerto Rico.
Our goal is to get at least 100 donations of $31 each to meet the $28-a-kit UNICEF target and to cover the Go Fund Me fees.
There is a saying in Puerto Rico: "No es lo mismo decirlo que hacerlo"--it is not the same to say than to do.
Actions speak louder than words. Please help in any way you can to be responsive to a community, to US citizens who don't have the same supports as incorporated states, to a people who need our help.
