My family has lived in our Chicago home for over twenty years, but since 2013, the area has been gentrifying rapidly. With that, comes rising rental costs. A new landlord sold the property from under us to a developer who refused to buy unless the units were empty. Our entire three-flat was subsequently evicted.
Since my enrollment as a full-time student in 2015, I’ve made personal sacrifices to diminish my parents’ financial load. This included taking out loans, and undertaking the maximum amount of work study possible for a student at my institution. In the past year (2017), while I’ve been away at school, my family has been evicted from their apartment, have lived in hotels on the outskirts of the city, and with family in Indiana to alleviate some of the financial burden.
During this entire time, my father, who is the sole member of our family with a driver’s license, has been working to support the four of us. Despite these strenuous efforts, it hasn't been enough. When we moved out of our apartment, the majority of our belongings were put into public storage units. Currently, we are in jeopardy of losing those units containing priceless items, photographs, and clothing due to rental costs exceeding what we can afford. The biggest goal is for our family to move into a Chicago property where we can store our belongings, but with rising property costs, and the persistence of landlords refusing homes and apartments due to bad credit and eviction history, it is becoming more difficult every day.
