After Stroke Recovery for a Legal Immigrant

My mom had a stroke last week. She lost her speech and is partially paralyzed. Her insurance is not covering the rehabilitation services. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Despite life’s challenges, I used to go to bed at night being comforted in knowing that everyone in my life is alive and healthy. However, as the saying goes, life can change in an instant.

My name is Nina Domricheva. Both my daughter and I are American citizens. In 2014, our mother and grandmother, Svitlana Gromashevska, joined us in the United States because she had no other family in her native country, Ukraine. The immigration process took almost two years; she arrived here as a permanent resident and a Green Card holder. In 2019, she can apply for an American citizenship.

Because of her status, she was given Emergency Medicaid. A week ago, the emergency happened. My mother had a stroke, lost her speech and became partially paralyzed. The emergency Medicaid covered ER and PCU stays, however, denied the rehabilitation services. Elkhart General Hospital agreed to provide the inpatient rehabilitation services even after the insurance denial. But inpatient rehabilitation is short term rehabilitation. She is working very hard, but still is not able to even move her body independently. Her right side is immobile and my mother is not capable to complete  personal tasks, such as using the bathroom and showering. She will be released in 2-3 weeks and she will need help, such as outpatient therapies (Occupational, Speech and Physical) and home care services. And we will need help! My daughter and I are her only family. I have a full time job and my daughter is a full time student and works to support herself. I am the only financial source my mother has and I am willing to support her needs, but I am not able to afford the healthcare service without insurance.

I am in the process of reapplying for traditional Medicaid, but, per FSSA, most likely it will be denied again. Without the Traditional Medicaid we cannot get the Aged and Disable waiver.  I contacted some political representatives and have not gotten anywhere so far. We will need the financial support for immediate after discharge care/recovery, until she can get the insurance coverage. I am in desperation of asking for help. I understand that not everyone can donate. I am asking to share this page as much as possible and I am grateful in advance.
