Grow Green is a program initiated by the Southwest Area Neighborhood Association (SWAN) in Rochester, New York, with a focus on engaging the community in urban agriculture and healthy eating.
Your contributions will help Grow Green Rochester make our community a healthier, happier and safer one.

About Us:
The Grow Green program engages youth, families and other community members in all aspects of urban agriculture, including planning what to grow, preparing soil for planting, starting plants from seeds, taking care of plants at all stages of their lives, selling produce and plants, and preserving produce for later use. Grow Green participants learn and use agricultural methods that are environmentally safe, conserve water, organic pesticide use, and are easily adopted even by people with little experience or health handicaps.
Grow Green program goals includes the following:
Youth become engaged with urban agriculture responsibilities and decisions
Youth and families become more physically active
Individuals have an opportunity to get back to nature
Youth and families appreciate themselves as contributors to one another and the larger community
Youth and families better understand healthy eating habits, healthy lifestyles, healthy environments, and change their behaviors accordingly.
Youth and families can explore opportunities for ecotherapy
Grow Green is an outdoor classroom that teaches how to…
Grow produce that is native to the area in which we live
Grow produce in the most optimal season
Avoid growing in contaminated soil
Make rain barrels
Work as a team
Recognize skill strength and areas in need of growth
Use creative skills to make a profit

S.T.E.M. Principles:
The SWAN Grow Green program supports the focus on those academic and professional disciplines that fall under the umbrella areas represented by STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math). According to both the U.S. National Research Council and the National Science Foundation, these disciplines are collectively considered core technological underpinnings of an advanced society. In many forums, the strength of the STEM workforce is viewed as an indicator of a nation’s ability to sustain itself, which supports SWAN’s interest in sustainable communities.
