Afro-Cuba: The Culture Photobook

About Me

My name is De'Andre Rafael Nuñez, a Studio Art Major & Film and Video minor at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA. A mist my arrival at Georgia State, I've been able to pick up the skill of street photography. Street photography, in my opinion is the most organic form of photography. The act of meeting a total stranger, asking to take their photo and having a revealing conversation in the middle of the Atlanta streets has been an extremely rewarding experience for me.

THE VISION

In my time as a college student I've come to the realization that each individual person has their own respective and unique "culture". I have also learned to appreciate the enormous impact that people of african heritage have on the world. This is why I've decided to start my culturally educational book called Afro-Cuba. In this book I want to educate the public, particularly the American public on Afro-Cuban culture. I want to do this in the "realist" way possible. By real, I mean authentic and relatable. I want to educate on region culture without statistics and without drawn out skewed-perspective history book facts. I want the most organic cultural based perspective, and in order to do that I have to go to the people. I believe that this is how you become cultured, by immersing yourself in the regions environment. My objective is to manifest this cultured experience through a collection of photos and quotes through the Afro-Cuban people. Cuba is soon to be commercialized, as the embargo is in the process of getting dropped. In saying this, afro-cuban culture will never be the same. I'd like to capture this time capsule with an introspective view on Afro-Cuban culture and share it with the rest of the world.

I'll be traveling to the following cities and documenting everything there and between:

Havana, Cienfuegos, Ciego de Avila, Camaguey, Las Tunas, Holguin, Bayamo, and Santiago de Cuba.

The majority of Afro-Cuban or "mulatto" people live in the Oriente Province. This is otherwise known as Eastern Cuba.

THE BOOK

I am of Afro-Cuban decent, and I have family members who reside in Cuba, so I thought why not start with my lineage and do my first photobook on the Afro-Cuban people. I'll be on the island of Cuba from March 14th through the 24th. While on the island I'll be visiting regions and landmarks that are well populated and known by the Afro-Cuban people. I'll be dividing the photobook up by location, examples would include Havana, Santiago de Cuba, and Cienfuegos. Each area or location would signify a, "new chapter" in the book. The book will have a "culturally educational" undertone to it, however, the people of Cuba will do the educating through organic interviews. The description of the "spots" will have the most traditionally educational parts of the book. An example could be a popular night club, monument, or historically driven location.

Help

I'll be facing a number of problems in actually getting the photobook published and distributed, these all revolving around funds, which is why I'll need your help!

I'll be making a digital copy of the book to start off. The paperback copy will follow soon after. I've already made contact with an author of three books who is more than eager to help me get my book formatted and published. The next step is just getting the photos/documenting and conducting interviews while on my trip. Thank you for all your help!!!
