African American Statue Fund

The nonprofit William C Goodridge Freedom Center and Underground Railroad Museum is planning to bring York City, Pennsylvania its first statue of a person of color. The organization is planning a life-size bronze statue of 19th-Century renaissance man William C Goodridge to be placed outside and in front of the museum, Goodridge’s former home at 123 E. Philadelphia St. in York.
The museum is one of few African American cultural sites in the United States.
Goodridge was a biracial entrepreneur who rose from slavery to business prominence in 19th-Century Pennsylvania. He owned numerous properties and operated multiple businesses, all while risking it to secretly transport slaves to freedom.
The statue will capture the theme of freedom and could include references to Goodridge's involvement in the underground railroad, his life and businesses.
