Africa Yoga Project 2018

Jambo (Hello in Swahili) Friends and Family! Thank you for taking the time to check out my fundraising page.

My name is Elizabeth Fasullo and I am headed to Nairobi, Kenya this March 2018 to complete a Seva (service) Project with Africa Yoga Project (AYP). My goal is to fundraise $4000 by March 27th 2018!

Through this Seva Project, I will be attending Kenya’s annual 200 hour Yoga Alliance Certified Teacher Training as a member of the Assisting team! Our mission is to educate the youth of East Africa and train over fifty new yoga teachers!!!!

Africa Yoga Project (AYP) is a non-profit organization founded in 2007 by Paige Elenson and Baron Baptiste. It is a leadership and yoga teacher training program where AYP educates, empowers, elevates, and employs African youth. Created for marginalized young adults, (ages 18 to 35), from the informal settlements in Africa, where the unemployment rate is up to 80 percent and individuals typically come from domestic work and other marginalized work avenues. After completion of the training, graduates earn international Yoga Alliance accreditation as yoga teachers and go teach classes in their own communities, at orphanages, prisons, schools, and other places. AYP provides scholarships to many of these youth for the training, and then also pay new teachers for their classes.

*All donations go toward sponsoring Kenyans to participate in this teacher training*

THE BUSINESS IDEA:
70% of Kenya’s youth is unemployed.
36 million people in the US practice yoga and spend over $16 million annually on classes, apparel and yoga related products.
Looking beyond yoga, the global wellness industry is a $3.7 trillion market so there is huge growth potential in Kenya and across Africa.

THE IMPACT:
Due to AYP’s impact, there are currently over 6,000 people participating in more than 300 yoga classes weekly in 80 locations across 13 different African countries.
More than 200 young people, trained as yoga teachers, are earning a living wage by teaching yoga to people who otherwise would not have the opportunity.

AYP is training global wellbeing leaders in and from Africa to lead the growth of the wellbeing industry of the continent.

MY STORY:
As many of you know, I traveled to Africa last February with friends and had the opportunity to experience the beauty and surreal nature that can only be found in Africa. Traveling to Africa was a profound and fulfilling experience in a time in my life where I was feeling a bit lost in my personal and professional life. Embracing the culture and keeping an open mind, I was able to learn more about myself and the world around me. This life changing journey provided not only breakthroughs and clarity in many aspects of my life but also left me awed, inspired, wanting to discover and do more. Now having the opportunity to go back to Africa and teach a practice that means so much to me is extremely humbling. Yoga has given me a space to lead with intention and impact, honor each individual’s path to self-awareness and love, and believe in endless possibilities. As a teacher, and as a human being, I can think of nothing more I’d want to accomplish than to share these tools, especially to a growing population who needs it most.

I’ve also had opportunity to train with Paige and many graduates of the AYP teacher training program. These individuals are some of the most powerful, inspirational people I’ve ever met. Hearing their stories and sharing the yoga practice with them has showed me that AYP’s model works. This community needs an outlet where they can express themselves and no longer hide inside. I believe what I will be doing in Kenya is beyond providing tools for employment. Having the privilege to be a part of this community’s transformation is something beyond me. On a deeper level, giving these trainees tools to share their stories, be leaders in their communities through an authentic voice and continue the rest of their lives on an empowered path will revolutionize Kenya and beyond.

Please support my passion project to be a leader in training the next round of 50 amazing teachers who will then lead the change in their own communities.

I also encourage you to watch the very inspirational video below!

Thank you in advance for all your generosity and support!
