AFE 2020 #helpuswithamask

The refugee crisis of Europe continues to worsen. Over 26,000 people are living in camps across the Aegean islands, often enduring waits  of several months to be granted asylum and gain entry to the mainland.

The Covid-19 pandemic has made the situation even more difficult. The cramped conditions that thousands find themselves in would make it impossible to stop the spread of the virus. Two horrendous fires have destroyed camps and forced replacement of thousands to other already over-populated camps.

We are a group of volunteers working for a non-governmental organisation called Action for Education on the Greek island of Chios. Action for Education (AFE) was established in 2018 by a group of long-term volunteers as an urgent response to the appalling conditions endured by children and youth asylum seekers that arrived on Chios.

AFE works to provide educational services and support to asylum seekers on Chios and Samos, including:

- The Mastic Campus, where 18-23 year olds can attend language classes, use the shower facilities, use the recently-opened Computer Lab, relax in the indoor and outdoor café spaces, play table tennis or table football, exercise, learn an instrument, and chill outside in the extensive garden

- The Yugi Centre, providing a safe space for teenagers and young adults between the ages of 15 and 18. Here, people improve their conflict management, non-violent communication and group-based decision-making through social integration and skills-based activities.

The Chios refugee camp was placed into lockdown on the 14th of October due to the confirmation of several Covid-19 cases, resulting in temporary suspension of The Mastic Campus and The Yugi Centre. The lockdown has been extended until 4th of November, although another extension is possible.

To help stop the spread of the virus and maintain the safety of our students, we want to provide reusable masks to allow students to participate in the classes we give.

Lise-Marie Bogreau, who recently launched her small sewing company LMB Design, is our partner in this project. Lise-Marie accepted without hesitation to make the masks we need for our participants. www.lmb.design

In order to buy these masks, we need your help. Any donation, no matter how small, will help our strive to provide masks for as many students as possible. We are extremely thankful for any contribution you can make.
