Chris & Asta are thrilled to mount our first GoFundMe effort to help our good friend. Aminata Sow is a 19-year-old college student from The Bronx. She earned a full, four-year scholarship to Canisius College in Buffalo, NY. Aminata is proud to be the first person in her family to attend college and is grateful to all the people who helped her. Her major is Political Science. Aminata’s goal, her dream, is to one day use her education to return to her home country of Guinea to contribute to its future.
Asta worked with Aminata through four years of high school helping her prepare for college through the heralded iMentor program. Asta and I have gotten to know her very well, and it has been truly satisfying to see this young woman who came to the United States unable to speak English not only overcome that challenge and graduate with honors but excel and earn that scholarship.
Aminata recently received an additional, partial scholarship from Canisius to attend its lauded Global Summer Program in Kenya. Led by Canisius faculty, the course includes immersion in East African history and culture by living and learning in Limuru. Students will complete 2 courses over four weeks with one week devoted to travel and cultural immersion, providing a unique opportunity for Aminata to enhance her scholastic career and develop valuable connections. In addition, Aminata, who already speaks 7 languages, will receive an introduction to Swahili.
The cost of this special program in Africa is $4,500. The Canisius scholarship is $3,000. She needs help raising the remaining $1,500. The cut-off date for our GoFundMe effort is March 24th. We are pleased to co-sponsor this GoFundMe effort. We believe in Aminata and the contributions she will make in the future. It is our pleasure to make the initial contribution.
