The story:
Ever since the day we said "I do" in the hot summer of 2010, we've been on an adventure full of twists and turns, ups and downs. Part of that adventure has been the process of building our family. As Brian says "baby makin' ain't easy!" Haha! :) But God, in his goodness, began working on our hearts far before we had even met and began to plant the thought of adoption into our hearts way back then....and now that dream is unfolding!
Where you come in:
Adoption, as most of you may know, can be quite expensive. That's why we're inviting you to be a part of our adoption story. To say we're humbled at the thought of our community financially rallying around us to make this dream a reality is a total and complete understatement. We can't thank you enough for considering to partner with us in big or small ways as we continue the search for our Little Lomas! Below are several details to help you understand the process, fees and timeline.
The details:
We are working with Zoe's House Adoption Agency in Overland Park to domestically adopt an infant (0-12mo). We have completed our home study process and have just been officially approved to be a "waiting family!"
The costs:
The cost of adoption varies, which makes it very hard to know "how much exactly" we need. An average adoption costs $10,000-40,000.
Here is what makes up that number....
• Our agency costs will total around $12,000-$14,000 which cover home study costs*, background checks, social worker expenses, placement fee, etc.
• Birthmom living expenses can range from $0-$1,800, depending on her needs.
• Medical fees for the birth mom can range from $0-$10,000, depending on her level of insurance
• Legal costs (adoption attorney for both us and the birth parents) can range from $3,000-$10,000+, depending on if the adoption is contested or not.
*We have already paid the home study fees and activation fees and are continuing to add to our savings as much as possible while we wait.
The timeline:
The waiting time varies but we've been told that it could be as short as two weeks or as long as 2+ years, which is why we started this fundraising page as soon as we were officially approved. Long story short, we'd like to be as financially ready as possible to say "yes!" as soon as a potential match comes our way. Once the match happens, several large fees are due (birthmom expenses, attorney retainers). Then, as soon as the baby is born and placed with us, the large placement fee will be due and attorney fees will continue until the adoption is finalized.
What if we get more than we need?
If we end up raising more money than the adoption costs, funds will go toward baby essentials, nursery items, or a possible second adoption.
