The Adeshina Emmanuel Sr Fund

On Aug. 23, my namesake Adeshina Emmanuel Sr died of a heart attack in Nigeria. He was 66. Some people knew him by his nickname, Allen Parker.  He was a cab driver and former business owner who lost both parents at an early age, studied in Greece, and worked in Italy and Israel before arriving in the U.S. in the mid 1980s.

Adeshina Sr was a clever, handsome and charismatic man. He was also stubborn and complicated in frustrating ways. I won't say I've never resented him. But I can say he loved me and was proud of me. He believed in me and challenged me to be a good man. He drove a cab long hours through the night for years without complaint. He didn't have much, but whatever he had was ours if we asked. I'll honor him until the day I join him and the rest of my ancestors.

His body is in Nigeria. I'm going there to bury him in a plot on our family's land. But I need your help. WE need your help. Our family must fly to Lagos within the week, and I can only cover so much airfare. Tickets are expensive, especially on such short notice. My hope is to fly myself, my younger brother, mother, nephew, and oldest sister there for his burial, and to help tie up loose ends for him, including securing the house he worked so hard to build with a gate and other finishing touches.

It’s going to be tough. My father lacked insurance, and this was a sudden death we never had time to plan for.
