Adelaide's House of Psychedelia

Donation protected
Adelaide's House of Psychedelia is a well known sight to many Adelaide residents, being located on a busy inner-city major thoroughfare. Its sole occupant, Royce Wells, was relatively unknown until recently, when news of his impending eviction from the house he has lived in for his entire life, following two generations before him, came to the attention of the media.

The condition of his house following years of degradation, and lack of facilities and services, such as running water, a bathroom and a kitchen, has been brought to the attention of the South Australian State Government's housing authorities, who has since deemed the house unfit for human habitation and demanded that he moves out until and while remediation works occur.

The primary reason for this degradation is Royce's reliance for many decades upon a disability pension, and now more recently, upon an aged pension, which is only just enough to cover his essentials, let alone enough to make repairs to his house. Royce has simply made do with the condition of his house, or undertaken makeshift repairs where absolutely necessary for a number of decades.

Royce was initially given only two days to leave his house, the deadline being Friday February 2 2018, however an eleventh hour effort by his close friend, Colin Beaton, has managed to delay his eviction date by approximately one month. While Colin and others are working diligently to delay or appeal any further action, Royce currently only has until Wednesday March 7 2018 to vacate his beloved house.

This GoFundMe has been created to raise $25,000, which is the current estimate to remediate his house to a point where the housing authorities will allow him to remain living there, which is our key priority at this point in time. Once Royce's living arrangements are once again secure, we will investigate what else needs to be done to ensure that he never again finds himself in such a predicament, and can return to his quiet and peaceful life.

The money raised will be used to replace the most degraded part of his house, which will include a living space, a bathroom, a toilet and a laundry. In addition, his kitchen will also receive some attention. Lastly, mains water and gas will be reconnected, and the condition of the house's electrical work and plumbing will be assessed and repaired as necessary. At present, we understand that these proposed works will be sufficient to meet the requirements of the housing authorities.

Royce has asked that any donors provide their names, as he would like to memorialise their contributions in some form, such as a plaque or artwork, in his house. In addition, those of us organising this fundraising effort for him would like to ensure that each donor is personally thanked; that they are able to see the current state, the progress, and the final outcome of this project; and where possible, the exact part of the project that their donation has enabled us to undertake.

For those of you who would like to follow Royce's story as it progresses, we invite you to join us on the Facebook page that has been created for that purpose, at https://www.facebook.com/AdelaidesHouseOfPsychedelia. We also ask that you share it with those whom you feel would be interested or may be able to assist us, as the more people who are involved, the quicker and easier it will be for us to ensure a positive and timely outcome to this story.
