UCD Rugby Club - AdAstra5k 2021

Dear Fellow Members and Supporters,

I hope that you and your families are keeping well.

Since the 2020 AdAstra 5km run, much work is being undertaken within the Club to ensure that we are prepared at every level for return to training and play.  This obviously includes our ability to finance the ongoing costs of running the Club.  Great work has been done by the Finance Committee and Treasurer to make sure we are ready for what will be undoubtedly a challenging and competitive time to continue to fund the Club.

The initiative below is an example of where members can play a critical part in continuing the success of the Club.  Shane Geraghty, Tadhg  O'Leary, Daragh Geraghty, Hannah  Hanlon, Kevin Croke and Luke Hickey have volunteered to lead an fun exercise challenge for members which will raise some important funding for the Club to help us bridge the gap from cancelled events.

The Ad Astra 5k is an opportunity for players, members and their family and friends to raise some fund for UCD whilst enjoying a lovely walk or run.  I have signed up and look forward to taking part.  For members who wish to support but cannot take part themselves the opportunity will be available to sponsor players taking part.

With renewed thanks to all and looking forward to a very successful event on beginning on 11 June and finishing on 13 June, 2021.  You will find all the details below.

With best wishes and looking forward to seeing you all back in Belfield soon.

Kind regards,

David Carrigy

The AdAstra 5k

The AdAstra 5km run is the the second annual fun run event being organised by UCD RFC, Ireland’s leading University Rugby Club. In these difficult times, community is more important than ever and every town, village and community in Ireland is struggling to come to terms with Covid-19 and its implications. UCD RFC is no different to any other sports club or community. It relies on its players to play and its supporters to support and at all times, this is done in the cause of being part of the UCD RFC community. Over time, players come and go, teams, coaches and managers change but the constant is “Collidge” and what it stands for. Friendships for life, community and the joy of playing or watching the game of rugby are things which unite us all and will continue to do.

The AdAstra 5k is a way for Collidge to connect with its players, members and supporters (old and new) in the face of the challenges posed by Covid-19 and social distancing. We are asking players, members and supporters to walk or run or cycle a total of 5km for Collidge on the weekend of 11-13 June, 2021 and on completion to make a donation to Collidge though our GoFundMe Page. In addition to this, we would ask that participants reach out to their own social networks and ask their friends, families and colleagues to support their individual 5km efforts by also making a contribution to the UCD GoFundMe page

We are aiming to raise €10,000 for Collidge which will go a long way to ensure that Collidge can continue to provide the best experience available for rugby players in UCD at all levels. Collidge faces many of the same issues and challenges as other clubs in other sports, with finances being stretched as a result of major fundraising activities such as the Annual Dinner having to be postponed. As a result, in short we need your support. The Collidge GoFundMe page allows us to reach out to the Collidge family throughout the world and ask for your support at this difficult time. Any amount, no matter how small will make a huge difference and we would encourage you to share the page with anyone that may be willing to participate.

So, on over the weekend of 11-13 June, 2021 take the first step on your way to 5km and hopefully you will be able to kick back and relax having completed the challenge and in the process having raised much needed funds for Collidge. We are very excited to launch this event and make sure you tag UCD RFC on Instagram (@UCDRugby) and Twitter (@UCDRugby) and use the hashtag #AdAstra5k when posting your photos. If you want to keep track of your progress, there is now a UCD Rugby Football Club page in Strava (the online fitness tracking app) so feel free to join this group and get recording your times and posting them. We will also be putting up challenges through the summer to ensure players and supporters are fit and ready for the 2021/22 season!

Thank you in advance for your support.
