Austin was born on November 24, 2017 with an unexpected diaphragmatic hernia and had to undergo a major surgery at just 5 days old. Austin spent his first 18 days of life in the NICU at Women & Infants Hospital. The Paille family was so happy to have their baby boy home for Christmas!
On Wednesday January 3rd Austin had a follow up with his surgeon and appeared to be doing great. Later on that night Austin began severe diarrhea and vomiting and on Thursday his worried parents trekked through the blizzard and brought him to Hasbro. After several tests and hours passed they were given the heartbreaking news that their baby, just under 6 weeks old would have to undergo his 2nd major surgery and it would take place that night. Austin had an intestinal blockage that proved to quite possibly be a result of his original surgery. The Paille family was lucky enough to have his original surgeon, Dr. Wills again. While in surgery the doctor found his spleen was also starting to attach to scar tissue and was able to work on that as well, hopefully eliminating another future surgery.
Erin's not the type to ask for help but as her sister and best friend, I know this is a troubling time for the family. Erin is an entrepreneur and not receiving any compensation for her maternity leave, they are living off one income. The medical bills from Austin's original surgery on top of his 18 day stay in the NICU and now his 2nd surgery fresh into the new year, a burden to say the least. Medical deductibles are very high and the expenses are again multiplying by the day as this tough cookie is trying to heal and head back home.
