My friend Jeff Carey is magical. I first saw his work in 2003. Pan and Boone at Creede Repertory Theatre. It swept me up and changed me. He captured what it feels like to be a kid, a son, an artist and a human, all while sharing some his most intimate and intense memories. In the play, we go along with two brothers, who dress like Peter Pan and Daniel Boone. Through their imaginations, we experience grief, fear, adventure, loneliness, comfort and loss. It's like a blanket that can keep you warm, but also can be turned into a heroes cape.
Jeff Carey is one of my heroes. When his mother died, he wrote Grimm Pajamas, which sees the Grimm Brothers telling themselves bedtime stories after their mothers funeral. Jeff has a way of taking real life hardships, and turning them into wonder-filled magical calls to adventure. It's alchemy.
As I write this, Jeff, my friend, my hero, this magical alchemist, is struggling. A series of health problems are coming between the Jeff that can perform miracles and the rest of the world. It's hard to know what to do when you see your close friend facing these challenges. So I'm doing what Jeff would do if he could; I'm turning it into a wonder-filled call to adventure.
Pan and Boone need three actors, designers, and a space that Pan can "fly" in. With three weeks of rehearsal and a two week run, the price tag for a production of Pan and Boone that does justice to Jeff's work will cost 10 grand, much less than most professional productions.
So, if you can, please donate. No amount is too small, or big. The goal is to have enough money to begin our work this summer. If you can't give, please share this.
The world is a crazy place. There's a lot of beauty and a lot of sadness, but there's a lot power in doing something for a friend, and in sharing something beautiful with people. With this, I'm trying to do both.
