Bolivian Amazon Action Pack

2019 saw the worst fires on record in the Amazon Basin. The economic politics of South America have led to incredible levels of deforestation by fires. While the media is largely focussed on Brazil, Bolivia has seen over 40% of its entire forests burnt. This is an area of over 5.3 million hectares, bigger than the size of Costa Rica. The worse hit area in Bolivia is the tropical dry forest of La Chiquitania in the department of Santa Cruz. It is the last great tropical dry forest on earth, one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet and home to many indigineous communities. The region was recently named the number one deforestation hotspot in the Amazon Basin by a scientific report available on Nature.com.

We are fundraising for a Bolivian Amazon Action Pack, targeting the worst hit area of La Chiquitania. Our organisation has a strong infrastructure to provide support to specific areas of need. The raised funds will be split equally across the following four groups:

1) Volunteer Firefighters

Volunteer firefighters have been battling the fires for 42 days straight. The volunteer department, 'UUBR - Unidad Urbana de Bomberos Rescates' ; works entirely in a non profit and non wage capacity. Tragically, eight firefighters have died during the disaster. The volunteers are in desperate need of improved protective safety equipment and other essential supplies. The funds will help provide them with these supplies and enable them to continue their much needed work.

2) Animal Refuge

It is estimated that over 2 million animals have died because of the disaster. Many are badly burnt, injured or with respiratory illnesses. 'Asociacion Civil Armonia'  are doing incredible work to help countless mammals, birds and reptiles that are suffering. The sanctuary needs more veterinary supplies and funds to continue their amazing work. They are nursing countless animals back to health or showing them kindness in their last moments. The scale of the animal loss is overwhelming.

3) Indigenous People

La Chiquitania is home to the Chiquitano, Guarani and Ayoreo indigenous communities. Being poor and of marginalised ethnicities, these communities have been hit hard by the disaster. Many homes, settlements and clean water supplies have been completely destroyed. The funds will be sent to the 'Asociacion de Indigenas del Departamento de Santa Cruz' to help provide them with clean water and basic living supplies. The funds will also help them in their journey to march to Santa Cruz to demand action from the government for the wild fires. Watch a video of there march here.

4) Forest Conservation

'Fundacion para la Conservacion del Bosque Chiquitano ' is a conservation group doing incredible work in La Chiquitania. They research and develop sustainable strategies for the tropical dry forest and the associated eco-systems. With a huge wealth of knowledge and experience drawn from scientific research and consulting with indigenous peoples, the conservation group are the best people to develop strategies to regenerate the burnt forest areas. It is criticial that this work is funded immediately so that conservation strategies can be implemented to protect the forest from further harm.

There are so many incredible volunteers and groups working now in La Chiquitania to put out the fires, save homes, rescue animals and to help restore the forest areas. The disaster is happening now, and your help can make a huge difference to everyone involved. All of the funds raised will be going straight to these four key groups. We have a large infrastructure of people and contacts on the ground in Bolivia and we will be following the progress of the funds that we send. Please sign up to our newsletter  on our website to be contacted with photo or video updates from all of the four key groups in need. They will be extremely grateful for your hep and would love to include you into the story.

We are here to act and make a difference. Bolivia is burning. We believe that Bolivia and the world belong to everybody. We are standing up to take responsibility for what we can do, right now, in this moment. We would be so grateful if you could join us on this journey.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, any donations are very much appreciated.
