Written Dec 2019: Every dollar donated will go to the right place to help save these beautiful dogs currently freezing outside in the Bulgarian winter. Here is what I first shared on my facebook about my experience at SHARO in Bulgaria a couple of months ago which explains it all:
Yesterday was the day both my mother and I visited this dog shelter here in Bulgaria where these animals have been taken off the streets and away from locals that shoot them, beat them and treat them horribly. The sad fact is that even though they have been taken off the streets, they still live in terrible conditions. They never get a bath or proper flea treatment. They live outside, even through the brutal Bulgarian winter, with nothing to protect them besides a wooden box. Arriving at the shelter we heard a very loud sound of dogs barking, all desperate to see our new faces....which is a rarity for them. Locked up in their tiny enclosures where they eat, sleep, excrete and repeat day in day out. No outside walks and in unclean conditions, they lapped up every second they had with us to get cuddles and love. They are all desperate for a loving home and comfort. We didn’t even visit the inside area of the house where apparently many more dogs are being kept, never able to go outside. Again sleeping, eating and excreting indoors. How disgusting! Unfortunately there are no laws in Bulgaria for animal cruelty, there are no organisations similar to RSPCA or Animal Welfare. We met this amazing woman Veronika Ianeva who saw the conditions these dogs were subjected to and decided to try and help however she could. She has been doing all she can over the last few years to help raise money to provide vet care, food and medication to these animals, as well as trying to find people in other countries of Europe to adopt them. They prefer the dogs are adopted outside of Bulgaria. It’s a huge task and one that would make anyone look away or ignore the situation but she keeps fighting, along with her husband and they have created this website called Sharo where you can donate and adopt. After meeting these gorgeous dogs first hand and seeing the sadness in their eyes I also want to do all I can to help these innocent animals and help them get a chance at a better life.
