Achilles surgery for Avery

Avery is a happy energetic 8 yr old boy with autism that desperately needs Achilles lengthening surgery because he walks on the tips of his toes and it affects his mobility. His calf muscles are so tight that he can’t put his heels down. Toe walking affects his balance to walk up and down stairs, physical activities, wearing sneakers and at times it’s uncomfortable and tiring.

The reason for Avery’s GoFund me fund me page is to cover the cost that the hospital and surgeon want up front, even with health insurance it’s still expensive. We love our son and want to give him an improved quality of life and normal function of his feet so he can be the best version of himself. By donation to Avery’s surgery this simple but profound opportunity can be possible. Thank you for taking the time to read this campaign  post any amount would greatly be appreciated. The goal date is as soon as possible with the hopes of September 2018 but will continue until the goal is meet.

Just to give you a little information about Achilles lengthening is a surgical procedure that aims to stretch the Achilles tendon to allow a person to walk flat-footed without a bend in the knee, or to bring relief to chronic pain. This procedure elongates a contracted Achilles tendon by making small cuts on the tendons at the back of the ankle. As the wounds heal, the tendons elongate.

Healing time for tendons is approximately six to eight weeks. Avery will be in a above the knee L position protective cast while the tendon heals. Physical therapy and rehabilitation is often needed after the initial healing period to help with strength and range of motion.

Being the parent of a son on the autism spectrum is something never expected and came with challengers. Avery showed signs at 3 years old and was officially diagnosed by 5 years. Today he is 8 years old smart and funny. But he brings us joy and makes us laugh, he’s our heart and I don’t know what we would do without him.

They say it takes a village to raise a child and we believe that to be true and want to say thank you to friends and family, The Fairmount School and its staff, Cherry Hill & New Bridge Center and a very special thank you to Avery’s teachers and faculty. My family and I are supporters of autismspeaks.org and hopes this will inspire you support the cause as well.
