ACES Educational Scholarship

Tax deductible
Background:

The Aldo Corsetti Education Scholarship (ACES) is in honor of Coach Lou’s father, Aldo Corsetti.  Aldo Corsetti passed away on May 24, 2017 after a four-year struggle with dementia.  Coach Lou’s wife Mary Jo was Aldo’s primary caregiver during that time, volunteering as an activities director and becoming a certified caregiver to help ease Mr. Corsetti’s condition.

Mr. Corsetti raised five children with his wife Lucille and they always valued education.  After his wife passed away, Mr. Corsetti moved to Atlanta, helping Lou and Mary Jo with tasks for Atlanta Youth Lacrosse, as well as attending games.  Although he could not get around very well, he always had a smile for the parents and children that he interacted with.  He enjoyed being around the players and was very happy to see them compete and have fun.

Mr. Corsetti was an accomplished football player in the late 1940s and had several scholarship offers from many colleges and universities. He married early in life and football took a back seat along with his education. He was very involved coaching youth baseball on Long Island and loved watching his sons compete, no matter which sport they were playing.  His youngest son Lou went on to have successful football and lacrosse careers at Marist College. Mr. and Mrs. Corsetti never missed a Marist football game and attended many lacrosse games as well.

Mr. Corsetti loved playing cards and called people “Ace” as a term of endearment, hence the creation of the ACES Scholarship program.

The ACES Scholarship program seeks to honor the memory of Aldo Corsetti by promoting educational opportunities and the academic endeavors of those who love the game and plan to play lacrosse in college.

A $1,000 per year scholarship will be awarded to a deserving Atlanta Youth Lacrosse Player/STAR volunteer each year.

Rules and Guidelines:

Applications will be considered on the following merits:

Being a STAR (Students That Accept Responsibility) volunteer:

Our STARs are upstanding members of the community that recognize the value of volunteering their time and energy to provide a wonderful experience to everyone who comes out to enjoy lacrosse. As the name implies, we cultivate a culture of responsibility at our fields where our volunteers are expected to show up on time, work hard, engage with the players and coaches, assume leadership roles and, most importantly, have fun.

Be an Atlanta Youth Lacrosse Alumni: All Atlanta Youth Lacrosse Alumni are eligible for the ACES scholarship.

1. Contributions to the sport or to your team
2. How have you helped promote the sport of lacrosse? This may include, but is not limited to the following: helping to start a club or team, coaching or officiating youth lacrosse, assisting at lacrosse camps or clinics
3. Serving in a leadership role on your team

Contributions to your school and community:

It is important to be well-rounded — athletics, grades, and other parts of academics and community life are important. Contributions to your school, participation in clubs, leadership roles, work experience, extracurricular activities, volunteer activities, etc. are important to achieve a well-balanced life.

Two letters of recommendation:

One letter must be from a teacher, guidance counselor, work supervisor, or other adult who knows you well.

One other letter must be from your lacrosse coach (or another coach).

Applications will be evaluated by an impartial panel made up of at least 3 scholarship advisory board members.

Scholarship recipients will be advised of the award by phone and/or email.
