Access to Education in Vietnam

Donation protected
I’ve been accepted into an international community service program with Rustic Pathways in Thailand and Vietnam. I greatly need help paying for the program and travel costs, and I would very much appreciate any donations, or if you’re able to share this on social media.

My name is Sikkiim Hamilton and I’m a senior about to graduate high school. For my final year in Los Angeles, I wanted to make sure that part of summer was spent serving a community in need. Throughout my high school career, I have been involved in various programs that specialize in mentoring children, including Peer Advisory Council and Community Youth Partnership. When considering what I value most, education is what has always come to mind, and I decided that my service should be involved with such.

For those of you who aren't familiar with Rustic Pathways, it's a program designed for teenagers to be able to travel globally and become immersed with the rich culture of foreign communities. Two years ago, I did community service with Rustic Pathways in Costa Rica, and it was so inspiring being able to support those in need.

Luckily, I found the perfect program for me. The Rustic Pathways Critical Issues Summit is a two-week program designed for students to learn about five global critical issues in small groups within five Southeastern Asian countries. The track that I decided to embark upon was Access to Education in Vietnam. The first week of the program is spent in Vietnam doing grassroots activism with local schools, students and the overall community. We will be learning basic Vietnamese, going to schools and universities in Hanoi, and spending time in the rural area of Tu Do Commune Villages. The second week, we will travel to the conference in Udon Thani, Thailand. Here, I will meet all of the other participants from the other five countries, and we’ll begin to learn about each other's experiences, and draft ideas for the design challenge. The second week of the program focuses on team building and business skills with other students, but also gain advice from issue experts, workshops, and community building. We will be able to make real change by the end of the two weeks. The winning team of the design challenge will be able to use a $10,000 grant from GiveBackHack to support innovative solutions to one of the critical issues.

Although I received a $1,500 grant from Rustic Pathways that I’m very grateful for, I’m still about $3,000 short for the remaining balance for trip expenses. This includes the program fees, travel fees, and various expenses for the two weeks.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for sharing and donating. Whatever you can do for my cause will truly be appreciated!
