Access for Andrew: Wheelchair Van

Donation protected
No-one, child, man or woman, should be isolated from the community, kept from being able to manage day-to-day tasks, or from connecting with people or participating in meaningful and useful community projects and hobbies. In today’s society, there are so many options for the disabled to reconnect with aspects of their lives, but far too often finances – or rather, lack of finances – prevents this, and far too often keeps someone who is disabled stuck and, quite literally, imprisoned in their own home.

Seven years ago, Andrew was diagnosed as high-level quadriplegic, and must use an electric wheelchair when in public to prevent further injury and damage himself. Electric wheelchairs do not fit in most vehicles, and special adaptations are required to be made to any vehicle that can transport it. Staring at 4 blank walls day after day doesn’t help his health, but going out is often impossible because taxi costs are high (even with a disability transport card), and disabled-access taxis are often unavailable. Taxi drivers are are often poorly trained in the proper loading and securing of wheelchairs:  Andrew has been badly significantly injured when drivers dropped him to the ground during loading (while in his wheelchair), and has been injured because of improper securing (which he cannot see because the wheelchair faces foward). Many medical appointments have been missed because the taxi never showed up; Andrew has been unable to visit family members in hospital, or get to other important events due to taxi unreliability and the associated expense.

The cost of purchasing an automobile in Australia is expensive to begin with, and being on a disabled pension, Andrew simply doesn’t have the money to purchase the vehicle.  Nationaly Disability Insurance Scheme funding will pay for the needed modifications - but it won't buy one.  You have to have the vehicle first.

We need your help in reaching our goal of $48,000 dollars. This will allow enough to either purchase a vehicle that is already modified, or go towards purchasing one that meets the stringent requirements of the NDIS so they will modify it.

Your dollars make a difference to someone in isolation – let’s help Andrew get around properly again.
