Community Agroforestry in Guinea-Bissau

My name is Helen and I work on projects that regenerate degraded land, support resilient sustainable livelihoods, food production and community, and deepen people-nature relationships. I am raising funds to support an agroforestry (the interaction of agriculture and trees) project in Guinea-Bissau in West Africa. I am leading the project and funding it with my own personal funds.
The work will plant a highly-diverse, abundant agroforestry area to focus on the production of cashew nuts (the main export crop in Guinea-Bissau) along with other crops for selling in local markets and for consumption by the farmers' families. It will build on existing agricultural knowledge and introduce new ways of growing food and crops that will regenerate forest ecosystems, require minimal inputs, and promote self-sufficiency.
Guinea-Bissau is currently one of the economically poorest countries in the world where people rely heavily on agriculture to support their daily needs. It still has many intact ecosystems, high biodiversity and rich human culture. However, agriculture is the main driver of land degradation and people also struggle to meet their daily needs and provide for their families by working on the land. I will work closely with people there to create new models for farming that support livelihoods and autonomy, and teach about how Nature works.
The funds will be used to buy seeds and saplings (in addition to those we will save and collect ourselves) and tools, to pay a fair daily wage to those working on the land over the next year, and to cover some of the transportation and my travel costs while I am there. Once the project has been established for up to two years, I will seek to support it with funding from donor organisations. I will also create a website with a blog and Facebook and Instagram profiles with regular updates of the work and information about Guinea-Bissau. I will travel to Guinea-Bissau to begin the project in April 2021.
This project is my dream and the culmination of many years of travelling and working around the world, building my knowledge and experience, working as a volunteer for many years, and connecting with good people from different cultures. The funds will not only allow me to fulfill my dream and live something I am so passionate about, but will help many good people in Guinea-Bissau, not only in the short-term but for many years into the future as well, supporting thriving communities connected to healthy ecosystems. I will be incredibly grateful for any small amount of support that you can offer and will use every penny, carefully, wisely and fairly to make this an excellent project. Thank you so much!!!
O meu nome é Helen e trabalho em projetos que regeneram terras degradadas, apóiam meios de vida, produção de alimentos e comunidade sustentáveis, e aprofundam as relações entre pessoas e a Natureza. Estou a angariar fundos para apoiar um projecto agro-florestal (a interacção da agricultura e das árvores) na Guiné-Bissau, na África Ocidental. Eu estou a liderar o projecto e a financiá-lo com os meus próprios fundos pessoais.
O trabalho irá plantar uma área agroflorestal altamente diversificada e abundante para se concentrar na produção de castanha de caju (a principal cultura de exportação na Guiné-Bissau) juntamente com outras culturas para venda nos mercados locais e para consumo das famílias dos agricultores. O projecto basear-se-á nos conhecimentos agrícolas existentes e introduzirá novas formas de cultivo de alimentos e culturas que irão regenerar os ecossistemas florestais, exigir o mínimo de insumos e promover a auto-suficiência.
A Guiné-Bissau é actualmente um dos países economicamente mais pobres do mundo, onde as pessoas dependem fortemente da agricultura para sustentar as suas necessidades diárias. Tem ainda muitos ecossistemas intactos, alta biodiversidade e uma rica cultura humana. No entanto, a agricultura é o principal motor da degradação da terra e as pessoas também lutam para satisfazer as suas necessidades diárias e sustentar as suas famílias trabalhando na terra. Trabalharei de perto com as pessoas de lá para criar novos modelos de agricultura que apoiem a subsistência e a autonomia, e ensinar sobre como a Natureza funciona.
Os fundos serão usados para comprar sementes e mudas (além daquelas que vamos guardar e recolher) e ferramentas, para pagar um salário diário justo aos que trabalham na terra durante o próximo ano, e para cobrir alguns dos custos de transporte e minhas despesas de viagem enquanto eu estiver lá. Uma vez que o projeto tenha sido estabelecido por até dois anos, procurarei apoiá-lo com financiamento de organizações doadoras. Também criarei um website com um blogue e perfis no Facebook e Instagram com actualizações regulares do trabalho e informações sobre a Guiné-Bissau. Vou viajar para a Guiné-Bissau para iniciar o projecto em abril de 2021.
Este projeto é o meu sonho e o culminar de muitos anos de viagem e trabalho ao redor do mundo, construindo meu conhecimento e experiência, trabalhando como voluntária por muitos anos, e conectando-se com boas pessoas de diferentes culturas. Os fundos não só me permitirão realizar o meu sonho e viver algo pelo qual sou tão apaixonado, mas também ajudar muitas pessoas boas na Guiné-Bissau, não só a curto prazo, mas também por muitos anos no futuro, apoiando comunidades prósperas ligadas a ecossistemas saudáveis.
