We are the Abolition Builders Cooperative.
We are a NYC-based builders crew that formed in affinity to the ongoing uprisings around the country and in response to the pressing material concerns within our city. From the rising instances of houselessness, to violence towards protesters, to mutual aid, there is critical role which we can play in response to the material needs of the times while diverting money from capitalist enterprises.
Our group is made up of builders with various experience levels and backgrounds all learning and teaching together. We exchange our knowledge with one another so that we may all improve in both our construction skills and develop our abolitionist practices. We value skill-sharing as a means to further political education. Building is not only a way to produce material projects, but a pathway that allows us to practice autonomy, problem-solving, efficiency, collaboration, and maybe a little ego death. We appreciate humility and continuously improving our means and methods of building and supporting the broader activist community of NYC. As with the rapidly transforming political landscape, we respond as rapidly as possible.
The sorts of projects we have begun and continue to build include a tool library, protective gear, temporary structures and architectural interventions to hostile urban design. Our next initiative is to begin leading cohorts of fellow activists in building projects which will introduce them to fundamental carpentry and building skills, further deepening our community and creating an additional space for manual and political education.
Up until this point, all of our projects have been funded out of our own pockets. In order to be able to adequately respond to direct action and mutual aid efforts, having a pool of money is crucial to fulfill reimbursements for our fellow members and continue to buy tools, hardware and materials for our further projects.
