Technology for Our Elderly

~ The Elderly:  the one minority that we all become ~

My name is Amanda Bixby and I'm in 7th grade at Central Middle School, 1 of 66 students in the Accelerated Eagle Program.  One prerequisite for the Eagle Program is to choose a community service project ... one that you're passionate about and would benefit each person your project will touch.

My project is focused on minimalizing social isolation for elderly residents in assisted living care through the use of technology.  How did I pick this project?  I'm glad you asked.

I am very close with my Grandma.  We talk 2-3 times a day on FaceTime, which we both love because we can see each other.  I can't imagine not being able to have this connection with her.  Although it took her a day or so to figure out how to use it, she now uses FaceTime to also talk to my cousins as well.  When she hears the special ring tone, it always puts a smile on her face.  She now uses FaceTime to talk to her friends and our family in Columbus, OH.

Through my 7 year friendship with my good friend Ryan, I got to know his Mom, Chrissy Canavan, founder of A Granddaughter's Promise and an advocate for elderly.  She has shared many stories of the elderly feeling isolated and lonely, not being able to see or talk to their family and friends.  I couldn't imagine my Grandma feeling that way!

For my project, I want to help make that connection possible.  I'm looking to raise enough money to purchase 6 Apple iPads, that will be allocated to 3 local resident facilities to enable more frequent communication between residents and their families.  I plan to spend time with the residents, getting them familiar with the technology, and getting their contacts onto the iPad.

I have high hopes that this will make the days less long and prevent the elderly from feeling isolated and lonely.  Giving them back a feeling of belonging while putting a smile on their faces.

This is just the beginning ... I will take this project all the way through to high school.  I am committed to making a positive impact on our elderly.

Please help me make this possible!  We all have Grandparents, or aging Parents, and we all will become "the elderly" someday.

Helping one person might not change the world, but it can change the whole world for that one person.
