Hey Everyone,
We are hoping to raise a bit of money to help out my niece (Abby) and her famiy for her next procedure to shrink and hopefully elimate the tumor that was found in her brain in March of this year. Abby will be going to the States this summer for 7-8 weeks in order to get treatment.
Background:
Abby is 10 years old and in the 5th grade in Rocky Mountain House, AB. She had been getting headaches for the past few years and they were getting progressively worse and at the start of March they noticed that her left eye had started to turn inward. March 6th she went in to see the optomitrist and she was immeidately sent for a CT scan. By March 10 she was admitted to the Stollery Childrens Hosptial in Edmonton with a brain tumor about size of a kiwi in the center of the brain.
Surgery was booked for Tuesday, March 14 and took 8.5 Hrs. It was very successful as they were only expecting to remove 50% of the tumor but were able to get 80%.
With a few hiccups and another 2 weeks in the Stollery, Abby was able to head home March 28th and start the road to recovery while the team at the Stollery came up with her treatment plan.
Abby has been on medication for her thyroid levels and has had to drastically change her diet over the last couple months, but she is doing great. June 1 they met with their team of Doctors and decided the best option is Proton Radiation Therapy to increase the chance of reducing the tumor and its growth rate.
Reason for Fundraising:
The Proton Radiation Therapy is not available in Canada, so Abby and her mom, Sherri-Lynn will have to go to either Memphis Tennessee or Jacksonville Florida for 7-8 weeks of radiation therapy. Sherri-Lynn will have to take at least 2 months off from work to be down there full time and it would be great if her dad, Jerry was able to go visit a couple times.
The treatments will be 5 days a week for 7 weeks, but will drop the re-growth of the tumor from 50% to 20% for the next five years.
They are planning for the treatments to begin Mid-July, which is why we are trying to help with funding right away. They will be busy enough preparing for everything else to be gone for 2 months.
