This summer I will be traveling to Kigali, Rwanda for an internship with GlobeMed|LU, and I need your help to get there!
GlobeMed is a national non-profit organization that partners university students with grassroots organizations around the world to improve the health of the impoverished. Throughout the year, GlobeMed chapters strengthen long-term partnerships through frequent communication, fundraise through innovative initiatives that help partner organizations achieve their missions, educate students about global health issues through a signature curriculum, and intern on-site with partner organizations"”which is what I will be doing!
The GROW Internship offers the opportunity for GlobeMed students to form relationships with members of their partner organizations and partner communities. GlobeMed at Lawrence University partners with Health Development Initiative (HDI)-Rwanda, a non-profit organization based in Kigali, Rwanda. HDI was founded in 2005 by a dedicated group of Rwandan physicians who were united by a shared vision to improve the health of disadvantaged communities. Today, they strive to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare for all Rwandans through advocacy, education, and training in an attempt to bridge the gap between communities and the healthcare system.
I will be working on HDI's "SHARE" program. The Sexual Health and Reproductive Education (SHARE) program uses a comprehensive strategy to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS and other STIs, as well as the prevalence of other reproductive illnesses. SHARE uses innovative strategies (such as role-playing, debate, creative writing, and sharing personal experiences) to educate Rwandan youth about reproductive rights and issues regarding sexual health and reproductive education. Through this program, we seek to ensure that young people engage in safe sexual health practices and do not have misconceptions about sexual health.
Wow! That was a lot of information, right? I just wanted all of you to have a solid idea of what you will be helping me work towards. I'm sure you all must be wondering exactly what I will be doing in Kigali. I, along with my team, will be doing the following:
1. Creating training materials to provide Rwandan youth with comprehensive sexual health education
2. Training peer educators to lead anti-AIDs clubs in their secondary schools in hopes of empowering youth to think critically and make educated choices about their sexual behavior
3. Working in communications"”updating SHAREtank, Facebook, Twitter, and the HDI websites
4. Monitoring and evaluation, helping with research to evaluate the effectiveness of the SHAREtank project"
This is a once in a lifetime experience, and I really need your help to make my dreams a reality! Anything you can contribute would be immensely appreciated.
