Actors Theatre Apprenticeship Fund

Friends, I need your help. I’m often dubious of these, I don’t blame you for feeling the same. I’m asking for your help because I quit my job to take a nine month apprenticeship with the Actors Theatre of Louisville and I leave at the end of July. I agree that it sounds financially irresponsible (to all the CPAs in my life) but it will be well worth the risk. While there, I will take classes, work under different administrative departments, audition for Equity shows, devise new work, attend auditioning seminars, see plays, and network with some of America’s most talented and creative theater artists. I promise to be looking for as many ways to support myself while living there, but I hear that the days are long and we only have major holidays off, so a regular job is not possible. I’m Wag-ing and Task Rabbit-ing and  I’ve saved as much as I could in preparation, but I still need a little bit more to get me and keep me in Louisville.

If you contribute, you will help me pay to live: rent, utilities, groceries, health insurance, and transportation. I was nervous about creating one of these because this seems like such a selfish request, and it is. “Please, pay for me to live while I pursue my art.” But seriously, please?

I’m doing this because I have a lot to learn as an actor and theater maker. I really regret not studying acting in college, so this is my chance to get months of continuous in-depth and on-the-job training. I want to learn how to create sustainable theater and I plan on bringing whatever I learn and my more effective gay, brown, Muslim, immigrant voice back to Chicago. There’s a terrible imbalance of representation out there and I’m going to figure what I can do to change that.

Lastly, I promise to go through my savings first and your kindness second. Anything left over from what you’ve given will be donated to CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations https://www.cair.com/). Please message me if I can answer any questions and I’m going to go kick some ass.

Thank you for your help,

Abbas
