As you may or may not know, we operate a clothing company based on Harbour Island in The Bahamas. After the events of last week my team and I felt compelled to create this Go Fund Me page. Miraculously, our home base and namesake, Briland, was not ostensibly impacted by the catastrophic category 5 hurricane Dorian. However, this can't be said of our close neighbors Abaco and Grand Bahamas.
Brilanders (Harbour Island residents) as well as Brylanders (our team of Americans and British ex-pats) have a deep connection to all of The Bahamas, and it is incredibly sad to see the devastation that has been caused by both the wind and flooding in the Northern Islands. We have friends and loved ones on North Eleuthera helping as best as they can, providing meals, shelter and clothing to those fortunate to find their way to safety. However, this is just the beginning and the rebuild will be long and expensive.
Below is a heartfelt email I received from a friend, customer and a longtime inhabitant of Abaco. She and her husband were just relocated to Nassau and it is her email that I hope will inspire you to donate.
It is unbelievable, unreal, nothing I have ever seen or so experience in my life time. It was as if they put a bomb over the Abacos. The entire city of Marsh Harbor and surrounded cays have been flattened, people have lost their homes, businesses and even lives. It’s heartbreaking. Our beautiful community gone.
Just writing this brings tears to my eyes as we have to start over, we have to completely rebuild.
Things needed to Help:
Boats with supplies to move debris ex. chainsaws Large Trucks or Jeeps that can move debris. Planes/ helicopters to evacuate people. Medical assistance doctors and nurses and supplies.
In addition to what our partners are doing at this very moment we in New York want to continue to contribute to other local relief efforts. Our goal is to raise $5,000 (or more) to help them rebuild with the proceeds going directly to clean up materials as well as purchasing as many chainsaws as possible!** Once we meet our target we will deliver them to Lowree in Florida (along with other supplies) where she will ensure that they get passed onto where they actually need to go.
**When big storms strike, emergency crews are generally taxed to their limits. Those who have felt the impact of debris, felled trees or limbs, may have to wait days and even weeks for assistance in putting their lives back together. A neighbor with a good chainsaw, can come in and help get the ball rolling much faster.
By helping do things such as debris and tree clearing, those with a chainsaw and the know how to use it can really speed the rebuilding process along. In the case of tree clearing, it can sometimes take the pros weeks or more after a big storm to come in and lend a hand. And then, the price can be very high.
Your charitable gift of support will go directly to or for the benefit of the Abaco Islands and the Bahamian people who need our help. Our Go Fund Me page will be active for as long as it takes yet we plan to deploy the donations immediately.
Please join us in this crucial effort to aid the Bahamian people. Together, we can make a significant difference in so many people’s lives.
