My Story

I was born on the 28th January 1992 at Scarborough general hospital with a singular cleft lip. During my childhood and early teens I’ve undertaken 3 operations, the first one at 3 months old when my to bound my lip“closed”, a hip bone graft when I was 10 years  to stabilize the bone structure in my top jaw and a further lip operation at 14 years to reduce the scaring and deformation.

But I’ve had it easy in comparison to some of the less fortunate children in the world.

In less developed countries like Pakistan and India who have limited resources and poorer healthcare systems, disadvantage children in poverty with cleft clips and facial disfigurements are left without a potential life saving and life-changing surgery. Because of the way they look growing up with an open cleft and lack of education and beliefs surrounding this little imperfection, they are taunted and bullied and ostracised from their communities and families.

I was lucky enough to have a fantastic NHS plastic surgeon Mr Nick Hart who was lucky enough to sew me up not once but twice!

(Me in my Happy Place)

Mr Nick Hart founded the Oversea’s Plastic Surgery Appeal after visiting Pakistan in 1998  and raised enough funds to be able to provide surgical services once a year. The support grew to such an extent that in 2008, the surgical team were able to make two trips a year and treat twice as many patients.

 How you can help...

To date, the teams have operated on more than 3000 patients. Approximately 100 to 150 patients receive surgery at each camp of 7 days duration. With your help, we can do more.

All the members of the medical team working with OPSA give their time free and no money is spent on administrative costs; it is all done by volunteers.

This means that every penny of every donation we receive goes directly towards our next trip and to changing children’s lives forever.

From the 5-7th of March I completed the David Goggins 4x4x48 challenge running a total of 48 miles...that's 4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours (equivalent of nearly 2 marathons).  Thank you to everyone who has donated and keeps donating after my challenge, I shall be keeping the link live for a little while longer before the funds are sent to OSPA
Thanks for your support.
