Info:

As an extension of the initiative "In the Mood for Love, Not Hate" started by Sunny Chen and her friends in San Francisco/ Bay Area, we are expanding the operation to the Los Angeles AAPI community.

In the United States, xenophobia and racist hate crimes towards Asians have risen by 1900% since the COVID-19 pandemic began. This anti-Asian sentiment takes the form of unprovoked, violent attacks and robberies often towards elderly people, women, and families in the Bay Area, LA, New York, and across America.

This string of attacks against Asians and Asian Americans has left our community on edge.

IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE, NOT HATE (LA Chapter) will be responding to these recent incidents by assembling and distributing safety accessories to Asian American communities in Los Angeles.

We are currently raising money to help cover the cost of materials: ID holders, lanyards, and personal safety alarms. Our goal is to distribute 2000 safety kits to senior centers and community outreach programs in Koreatown, Little Tokyo, Chinatown and more.

Emergency contact cards will be printed in Korean, Japanese, Thai, Tagalog, Chinese, and Vietnamese.

Each lanyard includes a 140DB Personal Security Alarm, an emergency contact card, and helpful bilingual phrases. They can be worn around the neck not only to enable those who wear them but to signal to those around them that they are protected by their community. This is specially intended to help our non-English speaking Asian American elders who might feel unsafe, need help walking home, or need emergency help in the event of an attack.

These AAPI safety accessories are meant to be a symbol of community support and proactive resistance towards Asian violence and hate crimes. We hope that the lanyards can provide an added ounce of security to those who are fearful of being alone outdoors or running their daily errands.

Thank you so much for your support, we will be vigilant in protecting the Asian community.
