Aaliyah is a 10th grade student at Swartz Creek Community Schools. Aaliyah has been diagnosed with a form of cancer that has proven to be very aggressive and that has rapidly spread throughout her body. Amidst treatments and doctor appointments, Aaliyah attempted to continue on with her classwork and studies. Over this past summer, though, Aaliyah’s doctors informed her and her family that her prognosis was not good. The cancer had spread to yet another place in her body.
As Aaliyah and her family began having very real conversations about what the future held, Aaliyah expressed the strong desire to finish high school. She really wanted to graduate. (Her older brother is a senior this year.) Prior to school starting this year, her family inquired about the process and/or possibility of Aaliyah getting a GED or how to expedite her finishing her high school credits. The reality, though, was that time was of the essence.
After some discussion and review, the administration of Swartz Creek Community Schools decided to present Aaliyah with an honorary diploma from Swartz Creek High School, allowing her to focus her energy and time on her family while still allowing her to realize her dream and wish.
An honorary graduation ceremony for Aaliyah is being planned for Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at 6:00 pm at Swartz Creek High School Performing Arts Center. A reception for close friends and family will follow the ceremony.
As plans have been made, several people have stepped forward to offer their support, and others have wondered how they may help. Cash donations may be made in the main office at Swartz Creek High School.
However, as her story has been shared, others have asked for a way to donate. We felt that this may be a way for those wishing to assist her family to get involved.
One of Aaliyah’s greatest concerns is the financial burden that her medical expenses and potential funeral costs will place on her family.
