Support For An EagleOne Employee

One of EagleOne's employees has been battling with cancer for the past 7 years. She was diagnosed with lobular and ductal carcinoma with lymph node involvement in the left breast in September 2007. She underwent a left mastectomy in October 2007. During that time she received 2 months of IV chemo and 2 months of radiation as well as participated in a clinical trial during her treatment.

On 7/10/12, she underwent a bone density scan to check her osteoporosis which was caused by the chemotherapy. The report came back with “suspicion” for bone metastasis. On 7/11/2012, she had a bone scan and CEA (blood work) done, which confirmed the suspicion. She was diagnosed with extensive bone metastasis, involving the entire spine, sacrum, sternum, ribs, and hips.

She presented to the Cancer Treatment Center in Zion, IL and for the first several months of taking the medication, the tumor markers decreased. As she began approaching the one year mark, the markers began to rise. In October 2013, the doctor decided to change her estrogen blocker to Tamoxifen, to “trick the cancer”. The markers continued to triple each month. She was last seen at the cancer center in February 2014 because she lost her medical insurance. She sought out then to find her own “cure” for the cancer. She began eating only fruits and vegetables and drinking only water. It didn’t decrease the tumor markers at all. In fact, it caused them to triple. She had to stop eating like this because she had lost too much weight.

She returned to her previous oncologist for treatment in May 2014. She was started on Faslodex injections, which she will receive every two weeks for the first month and then monthly thereafter. The cost of the medication is $6,420 with an administration fee of $454. She is responsible for a large portion of that if she is to continue with these injections every month. It will take about 8-12 weeks to determine if the injections will slow down the cancer. The last option is a different oral chemotherapy pill.

Her prognosis was initially 2-10 years, but this has now decreased since treatment is failing so early.

Her family is there for her day in and day out - Her husband and her son (15) and daughter (13), give her the love and support she needs to keep fighting. Her son is very active and enjoys any and every sport. He is on the Ultimate Frisbee team for his school. He loves to joke around and hang out with his many friends. Her daughter likes to spend most of her time with her mom or with her friends. She is very sweet and loves to help out around the house. She is a total “Mommy’s girl”. Both of her children are aware of her prognosis. It is especially difficult for her daughter, since she is extremely close to her mom. She is in counseling to help her deal with her feelings. Her son just hides his feelings, and uses humor to help him along. She is happily married to the love of her life and best friend, since 11/25/11. He is an out of work union plumber, trying to land a permanent position. Not a day goes by without him being emotional.

We are setting up this fundraiser for our co-worker and friend as she is beginning her first series of injections. She will need them every 2 weeks up until the end of June and then it will go to monthly. The cost of the injections is very expensive and insurance only covers a portion of it leaving her the remainder of the cost out of pocket. She is at the end of the road as she cannot afford any more treatment.

We are keeping her identity confidential as she is very private, but she is running out of options so we felt this is the right time to step in and help. On behalf of her and her family we would all appreciate anything you have to offer.

Thank you,
