Send Grant to Rwanda

To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing this to all my friends and family to ask for your support. I have been accepted by Western Washington University’s Global Learning Program to be part of an educational and rewarding experience in Africa. I have always been an explorer at heart and now I am excited to say that I will be traveling to Rwanda, this July. For six weeks we will be in the village of Gashora, building relationships with the community while experiencing a culture completely different from my own. In preparation for my adventure I enrolled in a fascinating Global Citizenship class last quarter and currently I devote time each day to learning their language and to reading several books concerning the genocide (We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We Will Be Killed with Our Families) and the country's rejuvenation post genocide (A Thousand Hills: Rwanda's Rebirth and the Man Who Dreamed It.) My entire life has been a zigzag of change, taking that class reoriented, yet again, my perspective on life. Now I have an itch that being a real global citizen is different than just learning about being one. Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you want to see in the world” but how can I know what change I want to see in the world if I haven’t seen the world? As in Plato’s allegory of the cave, is what I know only shadows of something bigger?

Like all things, this opportunity comes at a price. I am hopeful for the potential of your investment, to guarantee my future as a citizen of the world. Together, we can strengthen our future and like my arm against yellow fever, we can help inoculate America from internal ailments and strengthen our culture through global wisdom. Unfortunately, my usual financial aid award will not cover the $7,000 cost of the class and I must rely on high interest private loans, adding to my already surmounting student debt. According to the Labor Department, the cost of college tuition has grown by nearly 1,120% over the last 30 years. Help me scratch this itch by donating anything you can and contribute to this stage of my lifelong adventure.

Donations can be sent through this account (who subtracts a small fee) or to me directly and will be added to the total. As a bonus, everyone who donates will have full access to my travel blog and photographs while I am abroad.

Thank you,
