On the afternoon of Sunday, May 25th, 2014, I received a call that my son Josh Andrews and two of his four children were involved in a vehicle accident near Anchorage, Alaska. Josh, Jacob and Zachary were in a Honda Passport that left the roadway, became airborne and rolled six times. The highway was closed so a Lifeflight helicopter could remove Josh for immediate treatment of his life-threatening injuries. The boys were taken to the hospital by ambulance.
During the course of the night, a team of the best vascular, orthopedic and general surgeons at Providence Medical Center in Anchorage labored to skillfully put Josh back together. He suffered two broken ankles, damage to both knees, a severed popliteal artery that cut off the blood flow to his lower left leg, damage to his small bowel and colon, a flail chest (all his ribs on the right side were broken in two places), a lacerated, bruised lung and a severe concussion. A first responder told me that, through it all, he remained conscious and reached out his hands to touch his sons; he spoke softly to soothe them and told jokes to ease their fears. Josh remain heavily sedated for 13 long days.
My grandson Jacob is 16 years old and an ODP (Olympic Development Program) level soccer player. After the accident, he was in Intensive Care for four days with a severe concussion, a broken finger, contusions, lacerations and fractures to his C3 and C4 vertebrae. Fortunately, his spinal cord was not damaged. Several millimeters more would have meant a different outcome. He will be in a C-collar for 3 months and then a round of physical therapy. With prayers and perseverance, he may be able to again play soccer and eventually fulfill his dream of becoming a professional soccer player.
My grandson Zachary is 15 and was the least injured as he was in the back seat. He had a concussion, contusions, punctures and abrasions but thankfully, we were able to take him home that night. He was such a help to the police and first responders in making contact with family members and supplying information. The effects of the mental trauma will indeed be longer lasting than his physical injuries.
Several days ago, despite many surgeries, Josh's lower left leg had to be amputated. The doctors hope this surgery will improve his chances for a full recovery. As a single parent, soccer coach, professional carpenter and independent contractor, he had only his auto insurance to help pay huge and mounting medical costs. As Josh is the sole supporter of his four sons, and not knowing when or if he will be able to return to work, we have noved the family out of their home and in with family members to conserve funds. Josh is facing a long rehab and prostetic costs. I am asking for your support on his behalf.
As this Father's Day draws near, we are so very thankful that Joshua is alive to hold his boys! The two "little boys", who are 10 and 8, are especially excited as they have not seen their dad since the accident!
We thank God for by his Grace alone our family remains in tact. We Also thank you all for your generosity and prayers in helping this wonderful father in an urgent time of need!
