Help Emily and Her Family

Hi, I am here hoping to help alleviate some of the financial stress of some dear friends and their daughter, Emily. Her parents and I live in Oklahoma, and they have traveled to Colorado to be with her.

 

THIS IS NOT RELATED TO WILDFIRES.

 

Here is the start of the situation:

 

"Let me start by saying that she will be okay in the end. She just has a long and painful road ahead of her.

Last night (2-24), Emily was making candles. She doesn't know how or why, but the wax caught fire. She didn't want the fire to spread to the house, and she knew that water would spread it like a grease fire; she grabbed the pot to throw it in the snow outside; as she was doing that, the wax that was on fire got on her right hand and then her right thigh and left shin. So, she was on fire. She kept her head and dove in the snow to stop, drop, and roll. Finally, she got the fire out.

 

Duncan and Emily's cousin Peyton lives with them and heard her screaming and ran out to see what had happened. Duncan was at work. Peyton immediately called an ambulance and helped get her inside out of the cold. Peyton then went in the ambulance with her to the ER. Duncan was called, but due to his job, it took a while for him to get to the hospital.

At the ER, they started treating her and quickly started the process of transferring her to the burn unit at a hospital in Denver. There are 2 Thankfully's here. 1. Unless they change it, the worst burns are 2nd degree. (Update: they are 3rd degree burns) 2. Her injuries were not bad enough to need to be mediflighted to Denver, and she was transferred via ambulance. Once in Denver, they immediately started after burn treatments."

 

Emily has now had surgery for skin grafts, and she has been in a lot of pain. Today was the day they needed to clean and bathe her, which is an extremely painful process for burn victims.

 

"They did the wound care bath where they clean the graft & donor sites and they do peel away the dead stuff. Somehow her IV ended up getting messed up during this & the meds they were giving...she didn't get. They went under her skin. So Emily went through this process feeling it. They didn't know until later what happened.

So she was in utter hell & they couldn't give her more meds until the other absorbed some. So we had to just hold her and try to get her through it. She now has IV sedation going but she's still struggling some. Soon they'll be able to give her more pain medication."

 

They now have her sedated, but she has been in the hospital for a week, and she will be there at least another week, not to mention lots of medical bills and continual visits until she is fully healed.
