Palliative Care in Rural India

As many of you know I have been a Hospice volunteer for the past four years. Two years ago I completed a 15 week course based on Sogyal Rinpoche's classic text, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. The course included a ten day retreat attended by students from all over the world. It was during this retreat that I met Dr Abhijit Dam, who is the founder of Kosish Hospice in rural Jharkhand, India. Dr Abhijit Dam is a pioneer in Palliative care and pain management for the elderly and dying in the most impoverished rural lands of India. In the past year, Dr Abhijit Dam has used personal funds to build the first ever long term care facility for the elderly and terminally ill in rural India. The facility is complete, however there is no source of funding for staffing. Kosish Hospice is in desperate need of funding for staffing and medical supplies.
On January 24, 2016 I will be traveling to Kolkata, India and then to rural Jharkhand to spend a week at the Hospice facility built by Dr Abhijit Dam. The week will include a retreat session on "Self Care" for those involved in Palliative and Hospice care. It will be a week of intense spiritual practices and Ayurvedic teachings. I will be sharing with the attendees my own work and practice with Abington Hospice which includes meditation and drumming therapy for hospice caregivers. In addition, this trip will include a first hand look at the operation and long term needs of Kosish Hospice.
I am asking for your help in a small donation to the operation and mission of Kosish Hospice and the work of Dr Abhijit Dam. 100% of funds raised will go directly to the Hospice. This is not a fund raiser for travel expenses of any kind. The trip itself is fully funded. Please bear in mind that even a small donation goes a very long way in India. I have been told that $100 can provide the salary of a nurse for a month. A ten or twenty dollar donation is very meaningful.
The video is not easy to watch, but I urge you see for yourself the challenges faced and the great need for improvement and education regarding Palliative care in rural India.
