Removing Barriers Through Literacy

Donation protected

This is a fundraiser to provide the children at Johnson Elementary School in Denver with $7 worth of books every month of the 2014-15 school year through Book Trust. As a literacy interventionist at Johnson, I know first hand how early literacy can change the trajectory of children's lives. This is an investment that:

• Provides children from low-income homes the opportunity to choose and own books—a giant step toward literacy
• Creates equal footing for children from low-income homes among their better-off peers
• Empowers future generations to break out of the relentless cycle of illiteracy and low achievement inspiring life-long learning and societal engagement

The vison and mission of Book Trust:

Vision:
We at Book Trust imagine a world where literacy has removed barriers and provided all children with the tools to navigate life successfully.

Mission: Book Trust uniquely delivers choice and ownership of books to children from low-income families, increasing their literacy skills and fostering life-long learning.

In low income neighborhoods there is an average of 1 book per 300 children. In middle income neighborhoods there is an average of 13 books per 1 child.

“Access to books and educational material is the single biggest barrier to literacy development in the U.S. and beyond. If we can solve the problem of access, we will begin realizing educational parity – a goal which has eluded our country for generations.”
