Help Shelby Beat Ovarian Cancer!

Donation protected
My mom, Shelby Ramirez-Martinez is truly my Superhero! Anyone who knows us knows of her great love for family and supporting the community. She has ALWAYS put others before herself which is something that I admire greatly about her, as her daughter.

Unfortunately, our dear mother was recently diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer this past July 2018, which was a devastating shock to our family. As one can imagine being given a Cancer diagnosis is a very scary and overwhelming experience. Since the time we first became aware of her sickness, it seems as though it has just been an overwhelming snowball effect. All within just 2 months she has had to undergo surgery for Tumor removal, Chemotherapy port placement and her first Chemotherapy infusion. In an effort to alleviate stress and the financial burden our family is now faced with, we have created this GoFundMe page on her behalf. Let me tell you a little about my mom and her journey.

Shelby’s Journey
Life has thrown us some unexpected curve balls within this past year. In November 2017 we lost our dear grandmother when she was called home to be in heaven. Our grandmother was one heck of a strong woman and she has inspired us to never give up on life! At the time we had been vigorously taking care of our sick grandma, Shelby was internally dealing with undetected Ovarian Cancer which had been making her very sick over the last year. It was a shock to learn that my she was diagnosed with Cancer just 8 months after my grandmother had passed.

My mom will now have to undergo a total of 6 Chemotherapy treatments over the next 6 months. She will also need to have an abundance of doctor appointments, blood tests, scans, genetic testing and other medical procedures done in the near future. It is also speculated that with the type of Chemotherapy regimen she has been prescribed, she will lose all of the hair on her head unless she uses a “Cold Cap” system throughout the duration of the Chemotherapy Treatments. A “Cold Cap” system is a device which is used to cool the scalp with ice packs or cooling caps for a period of time before, during, and after each chemotherapy treatment to try to prevent or reduce hair loss. Hair loss is a much-feared side effect of Chemotherapy and is one of the most psychologically devastating aspects of cancer treatment. That is why we as a family are doing our best to help provide the extra monthly out of pocket cost for cold cap treatment as well as the cost of other medical treatments.

There have always been two breadwinners in my mom’s household but much has changed now that my mom is sick and cannot work. My Step Dad Lawrence now has to be the sole provider for a 4 person household on top of paying for many out of pocket medical expenses. If we don’t do something soon to fundraise money for my mom she may be left without needed medical treatments.

Why my mom is my Superhero

As I mentioned earlier my mom has always put others before herself. She is always quick to lend a helping hand to anyone in need and has always gone out of her way to make sure her family is taken care of, even if it means she goes without! She has been a caretaker for her aging father for many years and has worked very hard to provide for her family.

Not only is she an amazing mother, grandmother, wife and daughter but she is also an amazing social justice worker. Shelby has dedicated the last 6 years of her life to fighting for social injustices such assisting in the advocacy and passing of several Colorado Bills. Some of her major accomplishments include “Shelby’s Story” a documentary that was created about her specific story in order to aid in the passing of paid FMLA in Colorado, was featured in an article printed in Latina Cosmopolitan magazine, spoke on a panel featured at the Women in The World Conference in New York City, had been keynote speaker for several political events, assisted in the passing of the Pregnancy Fairness Workers Act for Colorado, testified in order to pass a new Domestic Violence Bill in Colorado to protect victims, and even had lunch with President Obama.

We are so very proud of our mom and it is for these reasons why she is a Superwoman in our eyes. Not only does she put her family before herself but she also works tirelessly to fight for social injustices to make sure that all families have what they need in order to grow and prosper.  Below you will find a link to “Shelby’s Story” as well as some pictures of her accomplishments.

My mom is truly a superwoman and I believe that she now deserves the same compassion that she has given to us for all of these years. She shows me what type of woman that I aspire to be. As a family, we ask for you to please help donate in order to alleviate the financial stress imposed on our family.

Please keep our family in your thoughts and prayers! We thank you ahead of time for any and all donations, prayers and support.

 With Love,
 The Ramirez/Martinez family
