Today, I recieved the following email:
Dear Ms. Spiteri,
I have been offered a once in a life time opportunity that would benefit my future. The Congress of Future Medical Leaders selected me to represent Miami Jackson Senior High school! I always dreamed of being a forensic pathologist, the burden of my dream was never having the opportunity to actually meet someone in this profession to teach me and give me insight. I came to you because I know you have knowledge about resources that can help me with my problem. My mother doesn't have a job and four kids to tend for. The program cost $1,585. I was hoping you can help me raise money. I have until July 31.

Aisia was one of my brightest students this year. Whenever I pushed her, she responded with interest, curiosity, and determination. Despite any financial issues at home, she was able to maintain a stellar GPA while being one of the best players on Miami Jackson's volleyball team.
I look back on my high school career and remember the endless advanced classes, extracurriculars, and opportunities that afforded me a chance to go to a great university with a generous scholarship. Then I realize that all of those things cost money - money that I was fortunate enough to receive from my parents. Due to low funding, there are currently only three AP classes offered at Miami Jackson High School, leaving the highest students hungry for more. Students like Aisia are forced to look elsewhere to boost their transcript and resume to achieve the post-secondary education they dream about, but again, these things cost money. I would feel like I haven't done my job if I haven't done absolutely everything to help my students achieve what they desire.
I selected Aisia to take AP Biology next year, where she will make strides to become even closer to her dream. Since Aisia is only currently in 10th grade, she will be taking Chemistry online this summer, as well as completing my preliminary AP Biology assignments. Her commitment to her future is unwavering.
