SAMANTHA’S BUCKET BRIGADE
WHAT IT IS: Distributing buckets filled with necessities to the homeless in and around Pittsburgh, PA.
HOW IT BEGAN: Last year (October 2017) Samantha (age 8) was walking with her grandparents in downtown Pittsburgh, when she heard a homeless person say, “Can you help me? I haven’t eaten in two days.”
“Not in two days!” Sammy said—over and over on the drive home. Then: “We can help. We should.”
HOW IT DEVELOPED: Samantha dragged these very same grandparents to the local Loews to buy plastic buckets— “We need ten for now” and then to all-purpose stores to fill them. Each bucket had (and has): a sweatshirt, socks, gloves, hand- and foot-warmers, basic first-aid care, canned tuna and meats, crackers, water, fruits and juices.
Sammy then prodded her grandparents into making forays out, especially in cold weather, to find homeless people around busy streets, under bridges, close to sports arenas, and other spots she has come to know. She then handed a bucket to anyone she found, saying only, “Here. I hope this helps.”
To this point, she has distributed between 25 and 30 buckets.
WHO SHE IS: Samantha Kincaid (pictured below with a sample bucket) is a Pittsburgh resident and attends McKnight Elementary School: in the third grade. She is very fond of animals, doing crafts, and eating cookies.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: Any donation is so welcome. You can join Samantha’s Bucket Brigade and stamp your name on your own bucket for $20. Or you can contribute what you can to purchase food items to help fill a number of buckets.
