Seeing the World in August

Hey friends.

I'm asking for help with this one.

I'm taking a grand leap this fall to study the Lecoq technique, a physical theater program, in Brussels.

There's an opportunity before that that would be amazing to take advantage of.  I'm calling it the Pre-Adventure.  It will be like an active but restorative page-turning from one remarkable experience (a year and a half in Sleep No More in NYC) to the next (two years at École Lassaad in Belgium).  It's going to be learning and challenge and surprise, and also regrouping and centering and pausing.

The first part is a professional and creative challenge with some deep draw.  I applied and have been accepted to participate in a workshop with the dance theatre company DV8 - an internationally renowned organization currently touring an all male piece in venues around the world.  When I auditioned for them a month ago simply for the experience, I felt welcomed by the air in the room - particularly drawn in by their curiosities and demand for precise physicality and bursting-with-meaning presence.  It will be a week of what they've titled Verbatim Dance Theatre with the company's director, Lloyd Newsome, and one of their lead, and incredibly generous, performers, Hannes Langolf.  I am excited by the chance to be rigorously working in a room with them for a week.  The tricky part (and also a speical part) is that the workshop costs a bit and it takes place in Vienna, Austria as a part of the global dance festival ImPulsTanz.

It turns out my good friend Hope Davis is going to be in Iceland around that time on the cheap.  As flights go, it won't be terribly out of the way to meet her on the way back.  This is where the regrouping and pausing comes in.  For the second part of the Pre-Adventure, I'm hoping to join her in surveying the breathtaking landscape and going on mini-photo excursions building off of a project we started at a farm in Pennsylvania this past spring.  I will also, though, be treating the trip as a writer's retreat of my own - a chance to stare and jot, in journals and on the computer digesting the massive two years I've had and to soak in the changes about to come.  I've been writing a bit in the city the past year (you may have read some short pieces) and the idea of having time devoted to that sounds quieting and re-energizing.  I've also been craving nature in a pretty fierce way since moving to New York.  Iceland is waiting; I would love to see it.  Maybe you have also seen some of Hope's photos from this past year.

For those of you kind enough to be exhausted about this for me, I will, after this, be spending the start of September soaking quietly in my Midwestern roots - in Chicago, Milwaukee, Libertyville and Michigan.

This will all cost a bit of money; it's a bit of a stretch.    I have been saving, and that will all be going toward school this fall - the deep adventure.  Would you be up for helping with a Pre-Adventure?  Would you be up for helping spread the word?  I ask humbly as money is a funny thing and people look at it and hold it many different ways.  If this sounds like something that would bring you gladness to see happen and you'd like to contribute, I'd be a bit amazed and so grateful, and that is how it will happen.  If what you've got for me is a smile and a "good luck.  Go get 'em."  I'll take it and be so thankful for that too.  I hope at the very least I won't create any grudge by asking.

I've decided over the last couple of years that it all starts with asking.

I'll be writing about the trip.  I'll be posting pictures.  I look forward to sharing it with you.  My blog is set up as "Letters About Adventures" - adventures of all kinds.  If you're game for a certain contribution, I'll address a personalized post for you.  For another amount, I'll handwrite you a letter about Adventure sprung from how much I know you or don't know you.  For a bundled bundle of dollars I'd love to print one of Hope's photos of your choosing for you and send it your way.

That's what I've got.

If you've continued to read, thank you.  Are you up for throwing some bucks towards adventure?  Everything everything helps.
