Friends, Family, and Famous Benefactors! Please help me continue my work in Greece with this Organization that does so much!
I arrived in Samos in June to find a shitty situation being dealt with in shitty ways. I saw men who hadnt showered for days because of water shortages, women who hadn't left the house because they were not provided sanitary pads, and children crusted with scabies playing with life vests.
I have done everything I could to help during my time here. I supervised the warehouse where dry clothes are sorted and prepared for new arrivals to the camp. I distributed those clothes under pressure from other organizations once they got there. I cleaned the camp of food waste to keep rats and snakes out. I distributed garbage bags to all the people living in pop up tents.
I did all these things regularly. In my opinion, they are all necessary and impactful. But the most important thing that I do regularly with Samos Volunteers is show humanity. I laughed with my students in French and English classes. I was shown the schrapnel scars of the man embarrassing me in a chess match. I learned the Farsi word for "Brother" while swimming and rock jumping with minors. I shimmy shaked badly to 50 Cent when a fitness member got bad news about his asylum proceedings.
The situation is getting worse, and theres so much more to be done. I am asking for money in this very, VERY uncharacteristic way because I really believe in the need for this organization, and the value added if I can return in the winter.
Please donate and share so that I can return to Samos January through May, on a budget of $400 a month based on $200 for rent, $100 for groceries, $50 for gas and rental fees, and $50 for unexpected costs.
