A Win for Joye and Winn

Donation protected
On December 18, 2017 life changed for Joye and Winn (Peter) Hampton.  That morning, Joye had her 6 month follow-up appointment after treatment for breast cancer including chemotherapy, a lumpectomy, and radiation.  She received the good news that she was clear and should return in another 6 months for a re-check.  What was a day of celebration ended with a devastating phone call that Winn, who was pursuing a new career in Greenville, SC, was hit by a drunk driver while riding his motorcycle home from work.

The trauma surgeons and CVICU staff at Greenville Memorial Hospital saved his life. When he arrived he had numerous fractures including his back, ribs, and pelvis.  The pelvis fracture caused a rupture to his arteries and veins resulting in immense blood loss.  That first night, he received over 100 units of blood (depleting the hospital’s supply) and was subsequently placed on an ECMO machine which helped to oxygenate his blood from donors.  For several weeks, Winn was considered to be in liver failure, respiratory failure, and kidney failure.  He had back surgery to repair the fracture of T4-8. The surgery to repair his pelvis left him unable to bear weight for 12 weeks.  Winn has now been transferred by ambulance to a facility in Green Cove Springs for recovery and rehabilitation.  During his first week there it was determined he no longer needs dialysis, he began physical & occupational therapy, and they are further weaning him off of oxygen and will eventually remove the trach.

Unfortunately, the driver of the vehicle has little insurance.   Of course, insurance never pays the complete hospital bill (which has yet to be received) but the Hamptons know that the ambulance service was well over $3K and NOT a penny paid by insurance.  The road ahead will be a long one and any help along the way would be greatly appreciated.  There is a possibility that Winn will be wheelchair bound which would require modifications to their home and a different vehicle.  Now there is only one paycheck coming in and this is a lot for Joye to carry alone.  Please help in ANY way you can.  They need our help now.
