A Wheelchair Bike for Kyle

You can help get Kyle back to the Seawall, after his amazing story of survival.

When Kyle was 18 years old he broke his neck diving into a lake. That day he became quadriplegic.

Before his accident he was an athletic young man who never sat still. He ran everywhere he went and also loved to go into the woods or be on or near the ocean. His mother would take him to the seawall often where they would cycle or rollerblade around and stop for a picnic or swim in the ocean. He was always in the lead during those rides because he was very competitive.

After his accident Kyle felt like he had nothing to live for. In deep depression all Kyle wanted to do was to be able to walk again. Doctors prescribed very high doses of painkillers and Kyle became addicted to opioids - suffering many years of indignities and subsequent misery.

The August before last, Kyle was in the intensive care unit at Saint Pauls hospital after several months battling infections in pneumonia. He was in a very weakened state and the doctors advised taking him off life support as there is no hope for recovery and they predicted that Kyle will die within a few hours. With Kyle's decreased mental capacity the family made the very difficult and painful decision to take him off life support. The ventilator that was helping him breathe was removed and doctors expected he would slip away. His family gathered around him to say goodbye as everything was removed and the medical equipment stop beeping. The doctor said people usually die within a few hours, but to the family surprise - Kyle became alert and tried to talk.

Hours later he was moved into another room in the hospital to recover, when he woke up he asked for pizza. Kyle spent a few more months in the hospital and then was transferred to a hospice where it was assumed that he would go to die. But Kyle didn't die he kept improving without any antibiotics.

After two years of being hospitalized  Kyle - being in bed and losing muscle mass-  his family wants to bring him back to the seawall where as a child he enjoyed so much pleasure. His family wants him to feel the wind and sea air on his face again. Being pushed around in the wheelchair, it's just not the same.

With a tandem bicycle wheelchair devise (as seen in picture) basically a reverse rickshaw you're disabled loved one can be in the front seat again. Manufactured in Holland and one in the US (some models are even electric) your loved one and you can enjoy the feeling of a bike ride.

Kyle's family envisions loaning it out to other families by teaming up with either Spinal Cord Injury BC or a seniors facility close to Kyles place so that other disabled or elderly people could also utilize it and improve their quality of lives as well.

Your gift of hope will make a huge difference in Kyle's life.

Thank you so very much if you consider helping. It is very much appreciated.
